Since a majority of our clients are homebound, our drivers are a critical part of the service we provide to the community. In fact, a volunteer driver is quite often the only person a client may see on any given day.
When you drive, you will use your own vehicle and gas, and we will provide you with extremely detailed driving directions. Routes generally take around 2 hours to complete. You will deliver meals within the metro Atlanta area and we can work with you to find a route that you are most comfortable with.
Availability
Monday-Saturday
(no Sunday deliveries)
Orientation/training
begins at 10am
Driver Requirements:
•Volunteer drivers must be at least 25 years of age (there is no minimum age for passengers)
•Volunteer drivers must carry at least $100,000 in vehicle liability insurance
•Volunteer drivers must pass a Background Check and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check (see below)
•Must have a valid driver’s license
What to wear: Although there is no strict dress code for meal delivery, we simply ask that you remember that you are representing Open Hand to our clients and the community.
PLEASE NOTE:
•Our insurance carrier requires a Background Check and Motor Vehicle Record check to reduce our liability. This applies to the driver only. There is an annual fee (usually $23 depending on state of residency) associated with this process to keep your records current. In light of this expense, we are asking our Client Meal Delivery volunteers to help offset the cost for required Background Checks and Motor Vehicle Reports.
•We make every effort to keep our administrative costs as low as possible - $.89 cents of every $1.00 we receive is designated towards our programs. Your payment helps us save administrative costs by providing an additional four meals for our low-income clients with nutritional needs. Thank you for your service and understanding of these safety measures.
If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at (404) 872-2707 or email us at volunteerservices@openhandatlanta.org for further explanation or assistance.
