Late in life, Alfreda became the caretaker to her older brother. He was going through chemotherapy, and needed someone to cook for him, take him to doctor’s appointments, and manage his symptoms. With limited income, time, and energy, Alfreda would make a big pot of soup that she could portion out for the evening meals, making breakfast and lunch while keeping a close eye on her brother.
Today, Open Hand provides meals to both Alfreda and her brother, free of charge. Now she doesn’t have to worry about waiting in line at the grocery store or fighting her arthritis to cook a meal. Instead, Alfreda has more time to get the rest she needs to do what she values most: care for her brother.
"It’s more than helpful - it’s a blessing. I’m 70, my brother is 77, and I’m his caregiver. Cooking, bathing, managing his medication—it can be overwhelming. These meals give me a break, they give us nutrition, and they give us dignity. On a very fixed income, I couldn’t afford food like this. I love the variety, the nutritional balance, and the convenience. Open Hand is a lifeline."
— Alfreda S.This year, Open Hand marks an incredible 37 years of nourishing our neighbors like Alfreda. Together, we continue to help those most in need feel seen and supported with medically tailored meals and nutrition. To celebrate this legacy, we have an ambitious goal we need to hit by the end of the year: to fund an additional 37,000 meals with the community’s support.
At a time when grocery prices continue climbing, we can't do this without you. Every $60 you give covers the quality ingredients needed for a week of meals, which supports better health outcomes and quality of life for clients with severe and chronic illnesses and their loved ones.
Will you help us kick off our campaign with a gift today? Together, we will raise $37,000 this month to provide 13,000 more meals—honoring the heart of our mission: We Cook. We Deliver. We Teach. We Care.
Thank you for being part of our story.
