Last month, we reached out to you because the future of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) funding was put at serious risk when the House of Representatives considered a draft federal budget that eliminates SNAP-Ed. We come to you again because SNAP-Ed is one step closer to elimination:
- The House approved the bill at the end of May. Since then, the Senate has been considering and amending the bill.
- The Senate’s amendments eliminate SNAP-Ed funding beginning October 1st, 2025.
- Due to the amendments the Senate has attached to the bill, it is now likely going back to the House due to Byrd Rules.
- If the bill is passed again in the House without further changes, the bill will become law.
Time remains of the essence. These potential cuts translate into an approximate $800,000 loss to our annual operating budget and will impact our ability to provide critical nutrition education to at-risk Georgia families.Providing access to nutrition is a core tenet of what we do at Open Hand:That’s been true since we cooked and delivered our first meals to our neighbors living with HIV/AIDS in 1988. Nutrition access takes more than our commitment, however: it takes major funding and support. It’s for these reasons we urge you to directly support this life-changing work. Now more than ever, your gift matters. While we are actively looking for alternative funds to cover the costs of these crucial programs, your donation can help us deliver what we know works.
