This World AIDS Day, we reflect on Open Hand's beginnings in 1988, when neighbors came together to cook and deliver meals to friends dying of AIDS. Perhaps the most poignant artifact from these early days was recently discovered during our move: a memorial panel inscribed with names and ages of lives lost too soon. At the top, it reads:
"...dedicated to the memory of our loved ones whose lives were cut short by AIDS and in honor of the gay community and their friends who offered comfort and support in times of suffering. May the good work done here always remain a labor of love for all people in need."
This panel reminds us of our roots and the compassion that built Open Hand.
Today, while our mission has expanded to serve many more individuals, we remain steadfast in our commitment to those living with HIV/AIDS. In fact, thousands of the meals we deliver daily nourish clients navigating the challenges of HIV, ensuring they have access to the nutrition and care they need to thrive.
As we honor the memory of those we’ve lost, we’re also looking ahead—we're now serving even more neighbors in need, ensuring no one faces illness or hunger alone. Your support keeps this labor of love alive. This World AIDS Day, join us in honoring the past while building hope for the future.
Thank you for being part of our journey. Together, we can continue to deliver love, dignity, and nutrition to those who need it most.
In Support of Open Hand Atlanta
Open Hand Atlanta delivers love, dignity and nutrition to neighbors in need in Atlanta and throughout Georgia. For 35 years, we have provided delicious, nourishing meals and nutrition education to thousands of people who are home-bound or too sick to cook for themselves. We’re honored to serve seniors, children and families, and our neighbors who are at risk for or have a disability or medical illness.
